Researchers have discovered that the bacteria (such as E. Coli, MRSA) most commonly found in hospital environments, can survive on keyboards and keyboard covers used in clinical areas.

Keyboard surfaces in the clinical environment serve as reservoirs for microorganisms that can cause infection in patients and healthcare workers due to cross contamination.  For example, when a keyboard is infected with MRSA, the probability of the bacterium spreading to user’s hands is high.

DCH Auriga has recently introduced GETT Anti-microbial input devices to the Hong Kong healthcare community.  These German branded devices, including keyboards and mice, are specially manufactured with anti-microbial material to suppress growth and eliminate harmful microbes.  They are being used in clean areas such as ICU’s (Intensive care units), Operation Theatres and CSSD’s (central sterile services departments) in the hospitals. 

The keyboards and mice are IP68 rated meaning that they can be fully submerged for thorough washing and cleaning.   One can also apply commonly used high level disinfectants on the input devices without damaging them.

Better cross contamination control in a hospital means:

• Reducing the cost and legal burden from facility-borne patient infection.
• Reducing the length of patient stay, allowing for increased turnover of patients.
